Have you received this message when adding your domain to Netlify? This could usually happen if this domain has been used with another service (such as name.com, Squarespace, etc.) who, like Netlify, utilise NS1 to deliver their service. It might have even have been used by somebody who owned the domain before you! There are 3 potential solutions:
Discover which other service you have used this domain with. You will need to contact that service and request them to remove the configuration for this domain at NS1. This is likely to be the only straightforward solution which will enable you to use our Netlify DNS, with this domain name. We have a dedicated guide to fix this with name.com. Unfortunately, NS1 is unable to tell us the service provider where this domain is already configured. However, in case you don’t know which provider this was, you may try the below step instead.
If nothing else above works , instead of using Netlify DNS, you can use the external DNS instructions to connect the domain name to the site at Netlify. Note that this can be just as fast as using our DNS hosting, as explained in this support guide.
If you wish to use Netlify DNS, please write in to Support, so we can get the zone cleared for you.
I had my domain configured to Netlify and it worked great then I deleted my website on Netlify and created another one and when I want to set up the same custom domain for that it tells me " A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1"
I’m experiencing a persistent issue (same issue reported here) with my newly registered domain, flussovisivo.com, and am seeking advice on how to resolve it. The domain was purchased through Squarespace, and I am attempting to add it to my Netlify account, but I keep encountering the error: “A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1, the DNS provider backing Netlify DNS.”
Configured Name Servers on Squarespace to point to Netlify.
Contacted Squarespace support, who assured me that any conflicting DNS zones were deleted.
Despite these steps, the error persists on Netlify.
It’s important to note that, to the best of my knowledge, this domain is newly registered and unlikely to have been used previously, reducing the chances of past configurations causing this issue.
I have successfully used other domains purchased via Google Domains with Netlify before without encountering such issues. Therefore, I am keen on resolving this within the framework of using Netlify’s DNS, rather than opting for external DNS settings.
I am looking for advice on:
Any additional steps I can take to resolve this issue with NS1 and Netlify DNS.
Specific guidance on communicating this unique situation to Squarespace or NS1, considering the domain’s likely new registration status.
Insights from anyone who might have faced and resolved a similar issue, especially with domains that are newly registered.
Any help or guidance from the community would be greatly appreciated, as this domain is critical for my project.
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!
If you’re getting this exact error message, there’s very little that Netlify can do about it. The error comes from NS1 when Netlify tries to create a DNS Zone there, so we cannot control that. Now if Squarespace says they’ve deleted the DNS Zone, there could be a possibility that it’s still either:
Registered somewhere else by a previous owner of the domain (if any)
Some NS1 internal issue
In both of these cases, you should be able to resolve it by contacting NS1 support, or by adding the domain to Netlify by using external DNS - so you won’t have to go through all this hassle.
