Custom domain - A DNS zone already exists on NS1

Hi, @seancze. It was as you suspected - a ’ phantom zone’. I’ve deleted it and you will be able to a the domain to your Netlify team now.

If it still gives errors or if there are any questions, please let us know.

Hi, @nialna. I’ll replied over on your follow-up post here:

In the future, please do not make more than one post for a single issue. Doing this only slows us down.

Hi! can you please remove my previous DNS zones for this domain. Previously, I had added a netlify hosted site on this domain which I deleted later on. Now when I try to configure this domain to my netlify account, it’s showing this error.

Hi @hamzahmd,

I’ve replied to your thread. Short note, that DNS zone doesn’t exist on Netlify.

Hi @luke , having the same issue with this error for the domain http://www.conversationswithashipwreck.com bought on Namecheap. I was able to manually configure it, but would like to configure it with Netlify’s Managed DNS. Is there a ‘phantom zone’ issue occuring?

Hi, @seventhofseven. I checked and I can confirm that, no, there is no phantom DNS zone issue occurring.

The recommended solution is to delete any DNS zones for this domain you may have configured with other services. Alternatively, you can create an account at NS1 (which is free - there is no charge to do so) and then ask the NS1 technical support to delete the DNS zone there for you.

If there are other questions, please let us know.

Hey, @luke I am using namecheap.com as my domain provider and they don’t have a DNS zone at NS1. I have gone through the support guide in this thread but NameCheap also doesn’t have an option to remove DNS zones. Can you check what’s wrong?

Hi, @prateek3255. We can check to see to see if the DNS zone exists under the Netlify account at NS1. However, if it isn’t then the solution for this issue can be found here:

In order to check, I need to know the domain name giving the error. Would you please tell us what domain that is?

You can post that information publicly or you can private message (PM) that to one of our support staff. I’ve confirmed that PMs are enabled for your community login. Please keep in mind that only one person can see the PM and this will likely mean a slower reply than posting the information publicly. Please feel free to reply to however you prefer though.

Hey @luke I’m also using namecheap.com as my domain provider and when setting up my domain lauraheine.com with Netlify DNS I also get the error: “A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1”. Would be really happy if you could have a look at this! Thanks!

Hi, @mkuehb. I checked and the DNS zone does not exist under Netlify’s NS1 account. We have a support guide with instructions about how to resolve this here:

To summarize, either:

  • Find the source the DNS zone (which could be Namecheap.com itself similar to the Name.com issues) and delete it there.

or:

  • Create a support ticket with NS1 (which requires creating a free account there) and their support team can delete it.

If there are other questions, please reply here anytime.

Hey @luke thanks for checking so quickly. I had the domain on vercel before and did not completely delete everything on there, so that’s where my existing dns zone on NS1 came from.

hi there @mkuehb , does that mean things are working now?

Hi @luke and @perry

2 years ago I set up the domain arb.is on Netlify.
I deleted it from my Netlify account shortly after.
Now I am trying to set up this domain again and I get this error

“A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1”

Is something that you guys can do?
I think the DNS zone for arb.is already exists on NS1 because I registered it on Netlify 2 years ago.

Hey @SveinnB,

When the DNS Zone exists on Netlify, we say custom domain is owned by another account. In your case, the zone actually exists on NS1 and not on Netlify. We don’t know where it could be configured, maybe you added it somewhere else in these 2 years?

@hrishikesh

Yes! You are right. I found it. Thanks

@luke having the same issues as described by others – Namechap domain (midascapital.xyz) and cannot add it to Netlify ( A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1 )

I’ve already deleted the NS there. Any chance there’s something from on the Netlify side?

Cheers,

CM

Hi @f55ca2db02a6c1cd1683,

Unfortunately no. As probably repeatedly mentioned in the above thread, this has little to nothing to do with Netlify. Note that removing NS is not enough and you might have to look for an explicit option to delete the DNS zone.

Hi @luke & @hrishikesh, having the same issue for the domain cyberpunkstaking.com

Can you check please? Thanks!

A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1

Hi, @gencher. Thanks for asking about this. There was an issue on the Netlify side of things and I’ve fixed that now.

Would you please try again and let us know if there are any further issues?
