Support for Handshake names in custom domains

Hi.
Would it be possible for Netlify to allow Handshake names to be added as custom domains?

GitHub Pages accepts this and can host static pages.

Even if the name itself is not possible, SLDs should be possible to register (ex: http://welcome.nb - .nb is not an ICANN tld).

To be clear, Netlify doesn’t need to interact with Handshake (optionally, to verify the name), just not restrict adding domains to only ones with the TLD on the list from ICANN.

What is Handshake?

Handshake is a UTXO-based blockchain protocol that manages the registration, renewal, and transfer of DNS top-level domains (TLDs). Our naming protocol differs from its predecessors in that it has no concept of namespacing or subdomains at the consensus layer. Its purpose is not to replace DNS, but to replace the root zone file and the root servers.

It is already supported by Heroku, GitHub Pages, Vercel, and NextDNS.

Thanks for the request!

I don’t believe we’ll be able to add this support, but I will get this in front of our product team for their consideration.

I think it unlikely, since so many of our internal systems DO rely on them being dns-resolvable, from finding which site is yours at service time, to getting SSL certificates - it isn’t particularly viable for us to move off that standard or add separate resolution paths to all of our services, just to set expectations.

But, we’ll also follow up here if things change!

Thanks for the reply, I understand.
Just wanted to put it out there are there was no other request here. Maybe if handshake does get popular down the line and is adopted by major browsers :crossed_fingers:.

as an active netlify user - I am waiting for this one - I have to use Amazon s3 for now to use handshake

It’ll be very useful. I am waiting for this support too.

Hi @himateja,

Thank you for dropping your comment. We’d pass it on to the devs.

I also need this integration. Hopefully we can see something on it soon.
