[Support Guide] How to set up Netlify DNS on a domain alias

Last Reviewed By Netlify Support Staff: September 2023

Oh hey! Needing to set up Netlify DNS hosting for your domain alias? These three steps will show you how!

  1. If you haven’t already, first add the domain in Team dashboard > Domains and follow the instructions in [Support Guide] DNS Quick Start - How to set up DNS on how to use Netlify DNS to point your registrar name servers to Netlify.
  2. Check to see if the DNS changes you’ve made have fully propagated using a DNS check propagation tool like https://dnschecker.org/. It’s important that you wait until changes have fully propagated before proceeding to the next step!!
  3. Once DNS changes have fully propagated, add the domain alias to your site in Site dashboard > Domain management > Production domains. You won’t be able to see the Netlify DNS checkmark but don’t be alarmed, you are using Netlify DNS if you set things up correctly. If you see a “Awaiting External DNS” link next to the domain, that means DNS changes haven’t fully propagated and you’re now using external DNS. If that’s the case, you’ll need to remove the domain then go back and revisit Step 2.

Congrats, you’ve successfully configured a domain alias using Netlify DNS! :tada:
