Based on the response given by Netlify, I’d recommend not using Netlify DNS when on the ‘Free plan’.
- Don’t set Netlify’s nameservers
- Follow these instructions to configure external DNS

- Reconfigure the DNS with your registrar
- With your MX records
- With any other records you have
- With the A & CNAME records pointing to the Netlify site as per the link above
- Remove Netlify’s Nameservers from your registrar (so the registrar records are used instead)
- Manage your DNS via the registrar in future
