Risks of switching to free tier from basic

Hi

I currently have an account with you for my site. I believe I’m on the basic plan at the moment.

I’m aware in the past other sites have been charged excessive fees if they come under attack and there is no option to have the site disable once it hits it’s limit.

I am aware there’s a free plan.

Could you please let me know if:

  1. It’s possible to switch to a free tier from basic?
  2. Does the free plan stop the risk of being charged?
2.1. If so, what happens when usage is hit, does the site switch off?
  3. I have my domain purchased through Netlify. If I switch to the free plan, is it still possible to retain that domain name, and how would I pay for it going forward?
  4. If I have a domain name hosted by an external provider and chose to point at my site when on Basic tier, does anything need to be done when switching to a free tier?

You can see a quick breakdown of the Starter/Free plan comparison/differences here:

Yes, although you may need to contact support to do so.
The page will advise you when you try.

Yes, you won’t ever be charged on the ‘Free’ plan.
You don’t even need to have billing details against the account.

Yes, your site, (and even your DNS if using Netlify DNS), will be disabled until the end of the billing period.
This will occur if you exceed any of the plan limits.

There is no ‘Basic tier’, so I presume you mean the ‘Starter’ plan.
Nothing will need to be changed with your DNS.
