We are a non-profit seeking a solution to replace Vercel, who refuse to support non-profit usage of their platform, period.
We approached Netlify Sales and Support but they seem unwilling to provide details that we need to be sure about; primarily around credits, their usage, charges, bandwidth, and being cut off.
What we have learned so far is Netlifly do not specifically support non-profits in any way and they do not seem interested in assisting us with questions we have. We have also learned that Netlify do not class a registered wildlife conservation non-profit as “public good” use case, even when the authorities do class us as an public good NGO, which we find a little ridiculous, but that is the policy apparently. So we are here.
The Netlify’s Free tier, we think, will allow hosting production and operational websites for free, but we will need to stay within their “bandwidth allowances”; if we understand this correctly. We wish to build a bridge to a ledger. We have no idea how to determine if what we need to build will place us at risk, or how to estimate our bandwidth usage. We therefore cannot work out our bridge will place us at risk of one day simply being cut off by Netlify, just for running a transaction-based donation script.
At this point we cannot even determine if this activity of recording a donation is called a “commercial activity” by Netlify, as it is by Vercel, therefore making each transaction chargeable. It sounds ridiculous but to us it is a big deal and a very important detail.
Also, we cannot determine the maximum execution timeout limit for Serverless Functions on the Free tier, so we have concerns there.
We do not know if our site or functions exceed the 100 GB bandwidth or 125,000 invocation limits due to a “traffic spike”, will Netlify automatically pause the service, or will they automatically charge us overage fees. Another important detail for a non-profit.
Another detail we cannot clearly establish is will our functions, deployed on the Free tier, ever expire, sleep permanently, or get deleted if they go for a period of time without receiving a request, as they do in Vercel.
If anyone out there has any experience as a non-profit, or with a non-profit use case, of for that matter experience on Netlify with transaction-based scripts, we would greatly appreciate some guidance please.
