Hosting large audio files for playback on site

Hey there!

i am building a site for a client where there will be audio files hosted (site name: vocal-kheer-0e88cd.netlify.app - please be kind, it’s nowhere near being finished) - these files will be anywhere from 6mins to 13mins long - currently in m4a format. There will be a total of 13 files eventually, but we’re starting with one and releasing a new one each week. His clients will be streaming this audio any time of day or night, anywhere in the world, and there could be anywhere from 2 to 1000+ people or more streaming at a time (we just don’t know yet but 100 people signed up w/in an hour so it seems like it could get really big). what are your limitations with something like this on the free plan? on a paid plan? his biggest concern is that the site will break when he goes live and that people won’t have access to this content. i’d like to avoid that at all costs. what do you think?

Thanks in advance!

I don’t think the site would break with those numbers, but you might have to worry about bandwidth costs.

Thank you! Do you know how much bandwidth something like that might take? Trying to figure out how much it would cost or what a better solution might be in terms of streaming audio.

It depends on:

  1. Number of visitors who would stream
  2. Size of each audio
  3. Number of times it would be streamed

Since we don’t know the answers to that, we cannot estimate this for you. But on Starter plan, you get 100 GB bandwidth for free, after which you’d be automatically be charged additional $55 per 100 GB. There’s no way to disable auto-upgrades, so please proceed with caution.

On Pro plan, you get 1 TB of bandwidth and then $55 per 100 GB.

great, thank you so much for this info! much appreciated!
