Fossil Fuel Opt Out — allow us to only use servers that run on renewable energy

I understand that Netlify has committed to environmental sustainability.

There’s been some discussion in the past about making sure Netlify’s CDN runs on renewable energy.

Obviously, that transition would be fantastic. In the mean time, would it be possible for users to opt-out of serving their site on fossil fuel run servers.

I’d personally be happy for my sites to have some added latency if it meant serving them from a renewably powered servers.

Would this be possible?

Think that sounds like a great idea!

Not sure how feasible it is for Netlify to implement though. But a great idea nonetheless.

hei there shadowfax,

this is a very interesting idea. I have passed it on to the relevant team. I’m not sure when this might happen, as it would require some elaborate retooling of our infrastructure, but i am all for it and happy to let you know if we ever make a move on this.

Awesome, that’s great to hear!

I know GreenWebFoundation has data on this, but I have no idea how accurate it is.

Hi Perry,
has there been any movement on this issue?
Thanks!

Hi @ShadowfaxRodeo,

No updates regarding this at the moment. What you’re suggesting might be a big change and would take time.
