Infinite Loop on the Verify Custom Domain Page

Once a custom domain is registered, a customer is always brought to the “verify custom domain” page, from whence she cannot proceed as she has already verified the domain. At no stage is she offered a path that will allow her to setup Netlify DNS. She is caught in an infinite loop.

This is a step-by-step breakdown of my own experience.

  1. I visit https://app.netlify.com/sites/anthonymunnelly/settings/domain

  2. I click the Add Custom Domain button.

  3. I am taken to https://app.netlify.com/sites/anthonymunnelly/settings/domain/setup

  4. I enter my custom domain name in the form and hit the Verify button.

  5. The following message appears: anthonymunnelly.com is already registered. If you registered this domain name through a different registrar, select Add domain to begin delegating it to Netlify.

  6. I am given the option to Add Domain or Try Another. I hit Add Domain.

  7. I am taken to https://app.netlify.com/sites/anthonymunnelly/settings/domain#custom-domains. Here I see three options:
    a. anthonymunnelly.netlify.app
    b. anthonymunnelly.com
    c. www.anthonymunnelly.com

  8. For the two anthonymunnelly.com values, I can either Check DNS Configuration or hit the option button, which has three choices:
    a. Edit Domain
    b. Remove Domain
    c. Setup Netlify DNS.

  9. I choose Setup Netlify DNS.

  10. This takes me to https://app.netlify.com/sites/anthonymunnelly/dns/setup/anthonymunnelly.com, a page that looks like the earlier Verify page, but isn’t, because it shows anthonymunnelly.com in its url.

  11. If I click verify, I get the same message I got earlier, even though I’ve already verified. I’m also only offered the Add domain button. I’m offered no other choice.

  12. And when I hit Add domain I get the error that people have been talking about: anthonymunnelly.com is already registered. If you registered this domain name through a different registrar, select Add domain to begin delegating it to Netlify.

  13. I return to https://app.netlify.com/sites/anthonymunnelly/settings/domain#custom-domains, hit optionsremove custom domain, and run steps 1-9 again.

  14. This time, I choose Check DNS Configuration.

  15. A modal, or popup, window appears called DNS configuration. There is an option to Setup Netlify DNS. I choose it.

  16. And I am brought back to https://app.netlify.com/sites/anthonymunnelly/dns/setup/anthonymunnelly.com

 @amunnelly , welcome to the community and thank you for the detailed write up! I wasn’t able to reproduce the issue on my end. Would you please try removing the custom domain from the site and let us know if you still encounter the loop?

Hi Audrey,

Thank you for responding so quickly. I’ve removed and re-added the custom domain a few times, with no result.

However, I was able to make progress on another site: https://happybayes.com/ is now the custom domain of my first Netlify site, https://app.netlify.com/sites/bejewelled-griffin-51ea31/overview. That’s working exactly as it should.

This suggests that my custom domain, anthonymunnelly.com is the problem. But both that site and happybayes.com are hosted by Namecheap so, to be honest, I’m as lost as I ever was, and hopelessly confused.

Unless - Namecheap is not the first-ever host of anthonymunnelly.com. I wonder if there is some trace of it somewhere with bluehost or squarespace or one of those providers. Is there any way I can look up the history of a url, a list of previous owners, like in the logbook of a car? Maybe I could do something that way?

All suggestions gratefully received,

Anthony.

Hi @amunnelly, I would encourage you to reach out to your domains provider.
