I’ve had a netlify account for a while and push from RStudio / quarto, or via the netlify cli; these have worked in the past.

I want to learn how to create a simple web page and need to be able to give it a valid, available name I want.
I simply uploaded a folder from my pc with an index.html file and a couple of other innocuous files, to make sure I know how this all works.
I’m trying to change the name to ANYTHING. Have tried nypolicy; nypolicy-aip; nypolicy-boyd; boyd-nypolicy, nypolicy-1234554321; and so on. All valid names, all available as far as I can see.
Everything fails. Whether I try to change through “Manage site name and thumbnail” or via netlify cli, it will not let me change the name from what netlify chose randomly. I always get “subdomain is not valid” and “This site name is already taken”
I did ask the chatbot. It’s answers were not relevant. It said I should make sure I use a valid name.
Hi there! I double checked and it doesn’t look like all of those site names are taken. Could you confirm that you’ve selected “edit site name” in the drop down options menu here?

The errors I see when I hit save
You can see that I’m presented with “Manage site name and thumbnail”, not the “Change site name” that your screenshot shows. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. I doubt it. I looked for a way to get to “Change site name” but I don’t see that anywhere.
