Error when trying to add my domain to my new user custom_domain is owned by another account

Hello support!

I just created a new user so that I can use my site setup on a different user than this one. I previously had a custom domain set up which I had purchased. I am now trying to add those domain settings to the domain settings on my new user, but that for some reason tells me that the “custom_domain is owned by another account”. Which isn’t the case anymore I think as I removed them from this one.

Hey there, this is happening because the custom domain you’re trying to use already exists on Netlify under a different account.

If you have some idea of who might be using the domain (maybe a previous collaborator or an agency you’ve worked with in the past?), the quickest way to get this resolved is for you to contact that person directly and ask them to remove the domain from their account here:

Netlify App > “Options” dropdown > “Remove domain”

If you’re not sure, please verify domain ownership and let us know by responding here when that’s done. If the verification is successful we can remove the domain from the other account so you can use it on yours.

Thanks for the reply! The user I am posting this on previously “owned” the domain that I am trying to use which is www.katachtig.nl. I now want to use that domain on my new user which goes by the email of infokatachtig@gmail.com. However on infokatachtig@gmail.com it keeps saying that the domain is owned by another user. As if this current user is still in ownership of the domain, even though it is not showing up in my list of custom domains:

This is what I see when I try to add the given domain on my new user:
custom_domain is already owned by another account.

hey there @Lesleyvdp , lets back up a bit.

are you trying to use the domain katachtig.nl as the custom domain for your netlify site kattenvriend.netlify.app? is that when you are getting the error message another domain is using this account?

if that’s the case then you need to prove that you own the domain katachtig.nl by creating a special txt record as described here:

we will then verify that you were able to create that record, which we consider sufficient proof you own the domain. then we will remove the block and you can assign that domain to your netlify site.

Sorry for the late reply. I am trying to add www.katachtig.nl to the katachtig.netlify.app which is owned by my other user. This user owns kattenvriend.netlify.app which previously had www.katachtig.nl set up as custom domain, so in essence I want to move that from kattenvriend.netlify.app to katachtig.netlify.app.

I previously ‘removed’ the www.katachtig.nl domain from my kattenvriend.netlify.app but despite that it keeps saying on katachtig.netlify.app that it is owned by another account.

Hey @Lesleyvdp,

Did you remove katachtig.nl from the Domains section of the UI or only from the site? Ensure it is not in the Domains section via https://app.netlify.com/teams/YOUR_USERNAME/dns.

Hey @coelmay , this was in fact the issue! I removed it from my original user and was then able to add it to my other one. Thanks a bunch.
