[Support Guide] What you can do about this error message: "A DNS zone for this domain already exists under a different account"

Have you received this message when adding your domain to a site on Netlify? Read on for solutions!

We show this error when a customer tries to add a domain to a site, but a DNS zone for that domain already exists under a different Netlify account.

If you think the domain might be under another Netlify account that you have access to, you can check your other accounts by toggling to them here in our app:

You may need to check other Netlify logins if you have them.

If you have some idea of who might own the DNS zone, maybe someone you’ve worked with in the past, the quickest way to get this resolved is for you to contact that person directly and ask them to remove the zone from their account here: app . netlify . com/teams/TEAM-NAME/dns/DOMAIN#delete-dns-zone. They should also make sure the domain has not been assigned to one of their sites.

If you’re not sure where that domain is being used, please follow the workflow in this article about verifying domain ownership, and make a new post in our Forums to let us know when that’s done. If the verification is successful we can delete the DNS zone from the other account and/or remove the domain from the other site so you can use the domain on yours.
