Custom domain with Namecheap using Namecheap basic DNS

According to the documentation, to configure the custom domain, in Namecheap, I need to switch from “namecheap basic DNS” to “Custom DNS”

This is not correct. You can use external DNS configuration.

Instead of the simple Gmail configuration available in Namecheap, you would need to configure the MX records. Read: Set up MX records for Google Workspace - Google Workspace Admin Help

And it would appear you have successfully configured Netlify DNS after all that.
