Hi I’m getting a segmentation fault on build

It seems as if the nextjs build and export worked and that something went wrong after that.

Try changing Node Version or change to Yarn.

I tried node 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and I tried Yarn.

Unfortunately I still get a segmentation fault.

I’ve realised the problem only exists on Ubuntu. It exports perfectly on windows.

Hi, @Rynhardf. The segfault is being caused by running out of memory. It isn’t caused by Ubuntu. It is caused the by the build system VM having less memory than your local system does.

There is only a guarantee of 3 GiB of memory for the build image. You might get as much as 6 GiB but 3 is the most that is promised.

Note, you can run the build in a local instance the build image VM to see how much memory it is using:

However, you can also likely profile the build in your existing local build system to see the memory use as well. The memory use should be similar regardless of OS with node.

I also thought it could be memory but if I run it locally on a Ubuntu VM with 16gb memory it still gives the segmentation falut.

I have found a work around. The sharp image library was causing the fault, I used another library instead.

Some more information in case someone is searching for segmentation fault on a build using Parcel v2.
I was also having this issue and tried upgrading to Sharp 0.29.0. (Sharp is used by the Parcel image transformer @parcel/transformer-image). That didn’t work. I removed all of the instances where I was resizing and converting to webP and my build started working. I added back just one resize and segmentation fault happened again.

One thing that I’m curious about though is I tried using macOS’s time to profile the memory usage and it showed under 800MB. This is well below the 3GB Netlify claims they use.

If you’re interested, here’s the command I used: /usr/bin/time -l npm run build

Hi, @aakoch. If the site’s build process is triggering a segfault due to out of memory (OOM) issues, we will do our best to make recommendations about debugging.

Would you please send us a link to a deploy which ran into one of these OOM errors?

Also, what version are you using for Parcel and all its dependencies? Would you please post your package.json here?

I ask because this sounds like a known issue and I see your comment about it here:

Did you try the PARCEL_WORKERS=0 environment variable workaround mentioned in that thread? If so, what were the results?
