Build problems: Failed to read Git log - exit code 255

Hello,
My site is failing to build. It was working fine until my last (couple) of commits from GitHub. I reverted these but the issue still persists. I’m not being able to tell where is the problem. I would appreciate if you could help me.

Hi @bienflorencia , welcome to the forums! Thank you for stopping by.

I think you can try the following:

Running Hugo with the following environment variable set seems to be working:

GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=true

From further research it appears Hugo has had issues in the past with global git configuration. I’m not sure if the above will help, but that is what I have found.

Also perhaps you can give these resources a read and see if that helps?

It is a compilation of all of our build and deploy resources. This will be a good starting point.

Lastly, please share these additional details so we can look into your experience further:

Hi @SamO, thanks for your reply!
I didn’t make any major change to my site - it’s been running for ages now. I just added a PDF and now I have that error at the hugo building.

I added some context on my first post, here they are again:

I created the environmental variable as mentioned here ("build.command" failed - Git-related? - #7 by nathanmartin), and it’s still not working. Any other suggestions?

@bienflorencia That shouldn’t be necessary if you’re setting the environment variable via other means, for example via your netlify.toml.

I also can’t advise regarding what should be set for hugo, as it’s not a system that I use.

In that case I was just trying to assist the user to add an environment variable at all, since they seemed unfamiliar with any method of doing it.

Nothing changed, and the issue was not solved.
After days of not being able to push new stuff to my site, I ended up updating my whole website

Could you please let us know what you tried after we rolled back our changes and what the results were? Perhaps as part of that information, you could link us to the build logs from the past (success) and recent (failure), since our staff can see your build logs pages?

I had the same problem. It was fine about a month back but now I get this error about “Failed to read Git log”. I resolved it by setting HUGO_ENABLEGITINFO to false in netlify.toml:

command = “hugo --gc”

[context.production.environment]
HUGO_VERSION = “0.52”
HUGO_ENV = “production”
HUGO_ENABLEGITINFO = “false”

AFAIK I don’t rely on git info for my website so it doesn’t affect me – but it might for you
