Trying to add custom domain - Unable to verify domain ownership

I’m trying to set up a custom domain for my son (Musab).

Site name: https://epic-wescoff-cf3fd7.netlify.app/
Custom domain: https://www.musab.me

I’ve registered the domain with Namecheap https://www.musab.me using my personal email (this is different from the Netlify email that I’ve registered https://epic-wescoff-cf3fd7.netlify.app/ with)…

When I try to verify the site, I get this error:

Do I need to update my DNS to add a record of some kind to allow Netlify to proceed with this step?

The better the post - the faster the answer.

Hi there! We’ve created this DNS Quickstart guide for this very purpose - to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

Please take a look - we have many resources listed at the bottom, too. And, there are tons of DNS questions you can access through our search! If your problem still persists after reading through all relevant guides, please post again and we will troubleshoot with you.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply @hillary .

I followed the sites and links that you posted above, but I’m still stuck.

I’ve actually added a custom domain to two other sites that I created recently (one on my own Netlify account and one on my daughter’s Netlify account), so I’m familiar with the process and have done this successfully before. I’m following the same steps that I’ve followed before, so I’m confused as to why those steps are now failing to work.

To retrace my steps:

  • I click the Add custom domain button in the Site settings for the site:

  • On the next screen, I enter in the URL and click the Yes, add domain option.

  • I’m presented with an error message: custom_domain is owned by another account.

Let me know what my next steps should be or if I should be doing additional changes (e.g. adding DNS records through my domain registrar) to allow me to add a custom domain to my site.

Here’s the error message that I’m presented with:

One of the things that’s not clear to me is how Netlify determines ownership of a domain. Right now my setup is as below:

Domain name: www.musab.me
Registered with: Namecheap
Using email: Different from my Netlify email

Netlify site: https://epic-wescoff-cf3fd7.netlify.app/

Hi @musabomair,

Sometimes, someone else connects the domain to Netlify. Later they delete the website, the domain is expired and re-available for sale. But the user doesn’t remove the configured domain from their dashboard. Thus, you could purchase the domain, but couldn’t add it to Netlify.

We’ve now removed the inactive DNS zone, so you should be able to connect the domain to your account.

After your changes, I was able to add the custom domain successfully to my account.
