This site can’t be reached error message

Hello,

I have a site that just went down, I’m getting a This site can’t be reached message on my browser, including my phone that isn’t on my network.

Here’s the custom domain: https://macemerg.ca
Here’s the Netlify site name: mcmaster-em.netlify.app
There’s no build errors, I just cleared the cache and rebuilt the site.

I am not using Netlify’s DNS management, so I wonder if this is related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there, @Cameron_Farquharson

Welcome to the Netlify Forums! This is a great question.

You can use external DNS while hosting on Netlify, there are just a few steps you need to take to make sure everything is set up correctly. My suspicion is that this may be the issue at play here. Why don’t you take a look at this Support Guide and follow the steps that Laura outlines.

Report back and let me know if this helps! If not, I will keep digging.

That’s the weird thing. It WAS working and I don’t know what changed.

@Cameron_Farquharson Welcome to the Netlify community.

Your site seems to load fine for me at each of these URLs, but you have an inactive DNS zone:

|================== check for inactive DNS zone =================
| --------------- last line should show nsone.net ---------------
;; Received 578 bytes from 199.4.144.2#53(any.ca-servers.ca) in 17 ms
macemerg.ca. 3600	IN	NS	ns68.domaincontrol.com.
macemerg.ca. 3600	IN	NS	ns67.domaincontrol.com.
;; Received 95 bytes from 173.201.71.44#53(ns68.domaincontrol.com) in 16 ms
|================================================================

Is it possible you added your domain via the Netlify domain page dashboard? When using external DNS, you do not need to add the domain to the Domains section, just to the dashboard of the site in question.
