I have an additional question that might be helpful for the docs above: How do we remove or redirect the original netlify url after we’ve setup our custom domain? So that we prevent duplicate versions of the site/app out in the search engines and elsewhere. Thanks.

You need not do this as we automatically add a canonical header:

but you can achieve that using Netlify Redirects
