Site down - showing 'Origin Error'

Hi, my site has been down for about 12 hours. I use Ezoic on my site and I have spoken to Ezoic tech support as I was getting ‘Origin Error’.

There reply was…

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out!

I was able to bypass Ezoic’s system and still received an error going to your site. Have you reached out to your host?

I haven’t changed anything on my site at all. What could cause my site to go down?

I have removed DNS settings pointing to Ezoic and have pointed them back towards Netlify. Site is now up.

However, I cannot run Ezoic ads. Ezoic has given me a large list of IP’s to whitelist with Netlify. How do I do that?

What is the purpose of whitelisting IPs? This would seem to be something done at the browser level by each visitor.

If ads are not showing up, you may be blocking them locally. I can’t imagine that Netlify is blocking them. Alternatively, your ads are keyed to your domain name, and there is a mismatch there.

You might ask Ezoic if they provide an ads.txt file for you to upload to your website. Maybe that will do what you need done.

Ezoic has supplied the ads,txt file. The site has been working fine with Ezoic for 3 months.

Here is their response re: whitelisting.

“Sometimes a host/registrar will block Ezoic’s IPs because Ezoic has a wide range of IPs, therefore they might incorrectly identify Ezoic’s IPs as ‘bots’ and block them, it’s common to happen. Were you able to ask Nelify to whitelist Ezoic’s range of IPs that were sent over in the last message?”

They may have no idea who Netlify is. Typically, any blocking would be done by your ISP, your browser, your Internet security devices (if any), your anti-whatever software (if any), etc. Services such as Cloudflare might also prevent connection with some IP addresses, but I have never seen Netlify block an IP.

Are you able to visit the sites listed in the ads.txt file directly, that is, not through your website?

Hi, @Kev, and welcome to the Netlify community site. :+1:

It is possible that an IP address has been blocked if it was part of a DDoS attack against a site hosted at Netlify. The chances that one of these IP addresses is being used by Ezoic is small but it isn’t impossible either.

There is a way to know for certain!

Would you please send us the list of IP addresses and I’ll confirm if we are blocking any of them?

I’m fine with you posting that list publicly (but I don’t know if Ezoic is). If you prefer, you can private message (PM) that information to us but PMs won’t get replies as quickly as a public response. (This is because PMs will exclude the rest of the support team and only one of us is able to reply.)

Thanks Luke, here is the list!

Hi, @Kev, none of those IP addresses/blocks are blocked by Netlify at this time. (There is only a single IP address blocked at this time and it isn’t on that list.)

There isn’t any explanation from out side why HTTP requests to this site would have stopped working. I do see the drop in traffic for this site at Netlify, but there is no error on our side.

We would normally ask for the x-nf-request-id header for a failed request. However, I don’t know if Ezoic retains those details. Would you please ask them for that header or the information it replaces?

There is more information about this header here:

If that header isn’t available for any reason, please send the information it replaces (or as many of these details as possible). Those details are:

  • the complete URL requested
  • the IP address for the system making the request
  • the IP address for the CDN node that responded
  • the day of the request
  • the time of the request
  • the timezone the time is in

With this information, we’ll be able to confirm if the request reached our service or not.

Thank you. I have passed on the info to Ezoic and I am waiting for a reply.

Good Morning.
The same thing is happening to me. I try to access my account through GitHut and is giving this error.
Last time support had blocked it because it thought it was spam, but it happened again.
I can’t access any of my sites.
I ask for help.

hey daniel, which site(s) is this regarding? both netlify site name and any custom domains would be helpful, thanks.
