Hi Netlify team,
A website hosted on Netlify recently stopped receiving a green-hosting result from Website Carbon. After investigating, this does not appear to be specific to the website or its DNS configuration.
The Green Web Foundation Greencheck API currently returns green:false, data:false for:
codedletter.comcoded-letter.netlify.appnetlify.comwww.netlify.comapex-loadbalancer.netlify.com- Netlify’s documented apex IP
75.2.60.5 - Current Netlify Frankfurt edge IPs
35.157.26.135and63.176.8.218
The custom domain uses Netlify DNS, and its addresses match the corresponding Netlify subdomain, so changing customer DNS records would not resolve the classification.
Green Web Foundation explains that a green result requires current provider evidence plus a technical link between that evidence and the IP ranges or ASNs serving customer sites. Netlify’s public sustainability page describes efficient Jamstack hosting and links to AWS and Google Cloud sustainability policies, but it does not appear to provide a current annual emissions inventory, renewable-energy evidence, or infrastructure mapping that customers or GWF can use for verification.
This is not a claim that Netlify uses non-renewable energy. It means the independent dataset currently reports that it cannot find sufficient evidence.
Could Netlify clarify:
- Is Netlify currently verified—or undergoing reverification—with the Green Web Foundation?
- If the previous verification expired, does Netlify plan to submit current 2025 evidence and updated IP/ASN ranges?
- Is there a more detailed sustainability or emissions report customers should reference beyond Sustainability, Renewable Energy, & The Environment - Netlify?

It would be useful to have an official answer because Website Carbon and other tools use the Green Web dataset, so this classification affects many Netlify customers.
